Exceedingly afraid
Exceedingly afraid
Jonah 1:10 “Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.”
God commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh, but instead, he boarded a ship for Tarshish.
As a result, God sent a great wind and the ship was like to be broken.
The mariners aboard the ship were afraid, calling upon their gods and hurling the ship’s cargo overboard.
While this was happening, Jonah was asleep. The captain ordered him to wake up and call upon his God.
Desperate to know what was happening, the crew cast lots. And the lot fell upon Jonah.
He told them he feared the God of heaven, the Creator, but it wasn’t obvious at that point.
Continuing to fear, the men asked some important questions, including: why have you disobeyed?
Those we encounter, who are caught up in the mess that our sin can make, might ask the same question.
There is no appropriate answer but sorrow and repentance. We must turn from our own way to His.
Jonah, it seems, is not ready for that yet.
