Weighed in an even balance

Weighed in an even balance

Job 31:5-6 “If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit; Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.”

The integrity of Job’s heart is laid before the Lord in this chapter.

He has been wrestling with his afflictions throughout this book, particularly struggling with accusations from his friends.

Is he the kind of man he thought he was? Has he been dishonest? Is he a hypocrite?

God is the One who knows without doubt. His scales measure perfectly. They reveal the truth.

It seems Job wants his motivations and actions judged in this way. To know the final answer.

These are dangerous questions to ask God. The answers may cut the very heart of us. But they are the right questions.

Readers have the benefit of answers about Job in the opening chapters of this book. But those are answers about Job.

Do we have the courage to inquire about ourselves? Do we have any interest in knowing the answers?

If we struggle to respond in the affirmative, important details are already being revealed. And we should not fail to recognize them.

Job 31:5-6 “If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit; Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.”
