Where is mine honour?

Malachi 1:6 “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?”

The prophet Malachi is addressing the nation of Israel generally, and Israel’s priests in particular here.

In each description of their disregard, dishonour, and disobedience, he also describes their lack of awareness.

First they seem unaware of God’s love. Malachi says that the people ask, after God says I have loved you, how have you loved us?

Their denial of awareness continues in specific religious practices. As the priests present offerings of polluted bread and blind, lame, or sick sacrifices.

The nation wears the label “God’s people,” but denies His love, fails to see His goodness, and offers Him only their cast-offs and second best.

This is an obvious failure to honor and fear Him. But I wonder if Israel is alone in doing this?

Malachi 1:6 “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?”
